YES! Magazine – IT Manager

YES! Magazine is seeking a full-time IT Manager who is passionate about helping our staff use the power of technology to build a more just and sustainable world.

YES! is a nonprofit, ad-free magazine and website that covers solutions to the critical social, political, and environmental challenges of our time. One of the nation’s most respected independent magazines, YES! reaches over 150,000 magazine readers each quarter and draws more than 100,000 visitors to our website each month. Our workplace is lively, supportive, and collaborative and offers many opportunities to learn and grow professionally.

Key Responsibilities
Maximize staff productivity by upgrading and maintaining computers, network, collaboration systems and other office technology; and supporting and training staff.
Maximize efficiency of our subscription fulfillment systems by working with the Fulfillment Team to streamline processes and integrate in-house databases with external services.

Ensure email newsletters reach their intended audience by timely sending of emails, and managing email lists and deliverability issues.

Support web strategy and infrastructure projects as needed.

Tasks and Time (40h/wk)

Maximize staff productivity – 40%
Administer network of 25 Macs and 4 PCs, including hardware and software upgrades, troubleshooting, and user support and training.
Administer current network services, including FirstClass email server, spam filter, file server, FileMaker Pro server, Adobe Version Cue server, and Retrospect backup system.

Migrate email/collaboration system from FirstClass to Google Apps, including getting staff buy-in, design, testing, implementation, training and support.

Implement, document and maintain enhanced data security procedures, addressing backup, firewall, virus and malware, passwords, etc.
Create forms, scripts and reports in our FileMaker-based customer database as needed.

Administer digital phone system and other office equipment.

Support teams’ specific technology needs by researching, acquiring, implementing and training users on appropriate new tools for a nonprofit publisher, including print and online content management and publishing, audio and video production, donor management, etc.

Maximize fulfillment efficiency – 20%

Work with Fulfillment Team to identify inefficiencies, design technology solutions to address them.
Work with Data Systems Programmer to complete automation of import of online orders from ZenCart into circulation system, Lynx Media First Edition.

Implement address correction systems (NCOA, ACS) using external services, create database tools to simplify this process for fulfillment staff.
Work with Data Systems Programmer to enhance functionality of web-based subscriber services.

Ensure email newsletters reach audience – 20%

Send 5-10 email newsletters produced by the Audience Development Team per month using WhatCounts.

Manage all email lists, including segmentation, synchronization between our FileMaker-based CRM system using WhatCounts’ databases, and bounce handling.

Maintain high deliverability, troubleshoot relevant issues.

Support web strategy and infrastructure – 20%

Help research and implement features on our Plone-based website.

Skills and/or Knowledge
System administration experience on both Macs and PCs
Network experience including configuring and troubleshooting TCP/IP, wireless, firewalls, and DSL
List/text processing and report creation experience using database, Excel and regular expressions
Strong knowledge of information technology best practices
Programming experience in databases, HTML, CSS required; Python, PHP, SQL, FileMaker desirable
Experience with any of our existing systems, ODBC, content management systems, Google Analytics and Google Apps desirable
Systems thinker, ability to make trade-offs and redesign processes to meet goals
Ability to develop, document and maintain systems
High attention to detail and accuracy
Customer service oriented – ability to train and support staff with patience

Strong project management skills
Highly organized

Compensation: Compensation in the low 30s. Excellent benefits, including fully-paid medical and dental insurance. Generous vacation policy plus 10 paid holidays.
