Environmental Protection Agency – Environmental Justice Program Staff

We are currently soliciting resumes for consideration for a part-time position in our Environmental Justice program in Region 10, in the Seattle office.

The Environmental Justice Program is a high priority program for EPA that crosscuts media boundaries and involves extensive outreach both within and outside the Regional Office. The EJ Program is responsible for a variety of functions, including: implementing goals and objective consistent with the President’s Executive Order; conducting community outreach efforts to assist in identifying environmental justice issues and strategies to address them; managing the EJ Small Grants Program;providing technical assistance to EPA programs and State, Tribal and local agencies; and developing models for effective environmental justice approaches.

The successful applicant will have a master’s degree or the equivalent of 2 years of full-time study leading to a Master’s Degree in the appropriate related discipline to meet the requirements for the GS-9 level.

Or

A combination of a bachelor’s degree and equivalent experience at the GS-07 level that reflects the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

1. Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing, with senior level managers, environmental justice stakeholders, State, Tribal and local officials, EPA’s constituents and the public.

2. Ability to develop creative problem-solving strategies.

3. Understanding of and commitment to environmental justice principles.

4. Working knowledge of the concepts and issues related to EJ.

5. Experience with working in or with communities of color and/or low-income or communities.

6. Experience and/or education in environmental health topics and issues.

7. Strong organizational skills.

ABOUT THE FEDERAL CAREER INTERN PROGRAM:

On July 6, 2000, the President signed Executive Order 13162 authorizing the establishment of the Federal Career Intern Program (FCIP). The purpose of the program is to assist agencies in recruiting and attracting exceptional men and women who have a variety of experience, academic disciplines, or competencies necessary for the effective analysis and execution of public programs.

If selected into the program, you will receive an Excepted Service appointment (Schedule B) not to exceed 2 years. You will be hired at the
GS-9 pay grade depending upon your qualifications. Employment as an Intern confers no rights to further Federal employment in either the competitive or excepted service. The FCIP includes a 2-year training component designed and approved by EPA. Continuance in the program is contingent upon satisfactory performance throughout the internship period. Once you successfully complete the program, you will be eligible for noncompetitive conversion to a permanent position in the Federal competitive service.
