ACLF could not exist without the generous support from the community and each year, we recognize community member(s) who have demonstrated outstanding contributions to the organization and the Asian Pacific Islander community with the Kip Tokuda Award.
2011:
Vera & Joey Ing
Vera was born and raised in Seattle. She is an early community activist who served on countless boards including: Inter*Im, Denise Louie, SCIDpda, Wing Luke, ACLF Honorary Board, and others – as well as United Way, North Seattle Community College, Seattle Center, etc. She represents the very early political movement that was very involved in ensuring the ID would maintain its historic identity while expanding its arms to new groups such as South and SE Asians. Her peers include Uncle Bob, Ruth and Ben Woo, Tomio Moriguchi, Dolores Sibonga, Bea Kiahara, Shigeko Uno and others.
Joey Ing is an architect and community supporter having contributed his time to many causes such as InterIm, the SCIDpda, the ID Historic Review board, designing the original Seattle ID Children’s Park and now advising on the renovation, serving on the Japanese Community Center construction efforts, and hiring many Asian Americans fresh out of architecture school when he ran his business years ago. He has broader community activities too including serving on the Seattle School Construction Advisory Committee, President of South Seattle Community College where he was instrumental in setting up a scholarship (incidentally, he designed the Jerry Brockey Center where ACLF is held its benefit dinner this year) and many more causes.
