Welcome Bao Nguyen!

ACLF welcomes our new Office Manager and Program Assistant, Bao Nguyen:

Since arriving in the United States at the age of ten, Bao Nguyen has grown up, lived and worked in White Center.  Following his completion of ACLF’s Community Leaders Program in 2010, he knew he wanted to be more involved in the International District to build his network and soak up the rich history of the area.   When the opportunity to work at ACLF came along, he could not let it pass.

In this spare time, Bao is a Leader at a local Vietnamese youth group where he also teaches lion dancing.  He likes to volunteer at community events and shares his zany observations through the International Examiner.  In his spare spare time, Bao loves reading, playing board/video/card games, and riding around on his motorcycle.

June 9 — How To Be A Changemaker: Combating HIV/AIDS and Eradicating Poverty through Social Enterprise

Mechai ViravaidyaACLF is proud to be a co-presenter with the World Affairs Council for an evening with Thailand’s “Mr. Condom,” Mechai Viravaidya.  As a leader in poverty alleviation in Thailand for decades, Mechai will discuss his creative solutions to eradicating poverty and will share why social enterprise is core to meeting our global health and development goals.  Viravaidya, popularly known as the “Condom King” or “Mr. Condom,” founded the Population and Community Development Association (PDA) in 1974 to address the unsustainable population growth rate in Thailand.  In order to integrate family planning into Thai culture and daily life, a variety of humorous, innovative, and unorthodox methods were utilized, such as training rural shopkeepers to dispense birth control pills and condoms, school condom blowing and relay races, and a vasectomy festival. In addition, PDA mobilized and educated a network of rural school teachers and village community members to make contraceptives available throughout Thailand.
